I just checked Josefina and Molly for the markings. Only Molly has them and she just had a head transplant this past July. The markings are very curious and they do look like initials.

Oh WAIT! Do yours have tags? I noticed that this one does not have a side tag either.

I do believe my Felicity (with the ear markings but no body tag) is pre-Mattel. When I compare her with Kailey she is plumper, has slightly larger feet, and has a browner skin tone (less peachy). Her hair also seems pretty red. I think this may have already been said, but if these marks are the signature of the original face mold creator, could Mattel still be using the original molds (with the signature) some of the time and exact copies (without the signature) at other times? Does that make sense?

Not all of the Mattel dolls, though have the markings. We have Addy, two Samanthas, and Kirsten that are pre-Mattel and none have tags and none have the markings on them. We also have Kit, Josefina, Felicity, Lindsey, and Kailey that were all post-Mattel (three were bought this past year from AG), and all have body tags and none have the marks. Our Kirsten and one of our Samanthas were made earlier than our Addy and our second Samantha, although all are pre-Mattel. You can tell by the size of the lettering, etc. so I don't think having the mark determines the age of the doll since we all seem to have early and later-made dolls that don't have the mark. Has anyone contacted AG about the mark to see what they could be. I did a search on the Internet for Gotz markings and couldn't find anything except that dolls marked by Gotz were written on the stomachs of the dolls.

None of my pre_mattel dolls have tags. None! And I am the bona fide original owners. All of my newer dolls do. I stopped collecting in '96 after my marriage and started up again two years ago so I am sure of my pre-Mattel and post-Mattel dolls.
I need to search for marks during my *spare* time.
NOt sure what the markings mean, but they definitely do not make the doll pre-mattel. I checked out some of the dolls at AGPC, and a lot of them have the little symbol behind the ear near the hairline. I did take my AGOT #15 that I purchased in 1997, and the only differences that I could tell between her and the one in the store is in their faces. The newer doll looks harder than mine does. More plastic looking. My doll has a rosier looking complexion. My doll also does not have a body tag. The only doll that I have that has one is an AGT that I bought at a yard sale a little while ago. Where size is concerned, the doll that I recently bought (yard sale AGT) is a bit plumper than my AGOT (#11). It would be very interesting to find out if there is a true way to know other than whether you are the original owner and have receipts to prove it. :-)
Of my dolls here, my 1989 white-bodied Samantha has the markings, and some of my AGTs I got at the MCM sale this year have it: black skin with bangs, Asian, and medium skin with Addy's face. I also noticed a correlation with PC copyright font. The ones with the marking have a bigger font than the ones without. I have 3 different molds with it. I am curious if anyone has a Kaya or Josefina/Nellie with it. My Kaya and Nellie don't have it. I think it is most likely something unique to certain production lines. It obviously has nothing to do with time. If it had to do with the artist, you'd think it would be on all of them. Plus that would mean the same Gotz arist came to AG to do Addy and the Asian.

There are also NO stars on her limbs.
I checked our dolls. Our Samantha, Molly, Kirsten, Felicity and Addy all have the marks behind the right ear. Kit, Kaya, Nellie, Josefina and Lindsey do not. I wonder if it has something to do with Pleasant vs. Mattel origination. Also, I noticed that they are all marked Pleasant Company is varied print, but Kaya is marked Pleasant Co. 2002. Still don't know what to look for on the legs, though!
While I was searching for posts about older Molly's I came across this post again. Did anyone ever figure out what the mark was? I just checked my white-bodied Molly which we think is from '86-'89 and she does not have the mark.
